In August 2020, for the first time in my l-o-n-g working life, my job ended. The job loss was not due to COVID and after 20 years with a wonderful company, several of my colleagues and I were let go due to a significant organization restructure.
That left me thinking, ‘What do I do now’? I have always been extremely fortunate to land jobs quite easily and whenever I moved on, it was my choice, not the company’s. It was strange not having another position to go to. And at age 62, friends and family figured I was going to retire but that’s not the case. I enjoy working and wanted to figure out my next chapter.
My long-time colleague Beth and I decided to combine our talents and start our own venture where we provide virtual assistance to businesses. I am a sucker for inspirational quotes and while setting up our business, I came across this one, ‘You are not too old and it’s not too late’. Plus, I have read so many inspiring stories about people my age and older starting a new business, going back to school, or pursuing their newfound passion.
Growing Through Change
I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur and through this process have worked at getting out of my comfort zone even more than I normally do. Each day I focus on my mindset and facing fears. This journey has been very rewarding to say the least. Never believe the saying ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’ I am developing many new skills and exploring a whole different world. I am extremely grateful for the amazing clients we now have the opportunity to support.
My story is certainly not a new one. Thousands before me have ventured out to new horizons in their 60’s and beyond. And although my story isn’t unique, I hope it will inspire someone reading this to have the courage to go after their dream.
‘Don’t be afraid to start over.
This time you are not starting from scratch; you are starting from experience’
Am I too old? No way! I am so happy I said ‘YES’ to trying something new with Beth!
Are you at a crossroads in your life? What are you waiting for? I’d love to hear about your new adventure!
